Culture secretary Tessa Jowell has imposed an initial limit of six Las Vegas-style casinos throughout the UK as part of the government’s controversial gambling reforms. The proposed legislation, a U-turn for Jowell, is now in the committee stage of its passage through Parliament . It was passed by the House of Commons last week despite a rebellion from 29 Labour MPs. It is understood that the proposed Gambling Commission and local government planning ministers will conduct detailed assessments on the effect of these initial “super-casinos” before approving further applications.
