Josie Rourke and Bartlett Sher to discuss directing on BBC Radio 3’s The Essay
Directors Emma Rice, Josie Rourke and Bartlett Sher will reflect on their careers and discuss the way they work as part of BBC Radio 3’s The Essay series next week.
The Essay: On Directing begins on Monday with Roger Michell, who will direct Richard Nelson’s Farewell to the Theatre at Hampstead Theatre this year, and continues on Tuesday with Emma Rice, joint artistic director of Kneehigh Theatre. She will explore the role of the director as a storyteller.
Sher will feature on Wednesday and will examine the importance of rhythm when creating theatre, while Rourke, newly appointed artistic director at the Donmar Warehouse, will discuss what happens when “disaster strikes in the production of a play” on Thursday.
In the programme, she reveals: “There were a couple of shows I did at the beginning of my career where the quality of my mistakes was so high, mistakes so great and so particular, they have informed everything I have done subsequently.”
The last programme of the series features film director Mike Figgis.
The Essay: On Directing airs next week, Monday to Friday, at 10.45pm until 11pm.
