Belfast MAC to reopen with Titanic play

Published Tuesday 7 February 2012 at 09:58 by Michael Quinn

The Metropolitan Arts Centre in Belfast will stage a new play by Owen McCafferty about the aftermath of the Titanic disaster as part of its inaugural season, when it opens for business in April.

Situated in the Northern Irish city’s Cathedral Quarter, facilities in the £18 million, six-storey, multi-purpose complex will include two theatre spaces, a dance studio, and rehearsal and workshop rooms. It will also serve as the base for four resident companies: Ponydance, and the theatre companies Bruiser, Tinderbox and Prime Cut Productions.

Performance highlights in the first season include productions of Sweet Charity and new works from Bruiser, Ponydance and children’s theatre company, Cahoots NI.

The building of the MAC, which replaces the dilapidated Old Museum Arts Centre, was first mooted in 1996. It will open to the public on April 20.
