Bolton Octagon’s production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? dominates nominations in the major categories of the rebranded Manchester Theatre Awards.

The production, directed by David Thacker, is up for the best production, best actor, best actress, best actress in a supporting role and best actor in a supporting role – with performers George Irving, Margot Leicester, Tammy Joelle and Kieran Hill nominated respectively.

The Lowry also dominates the nominees list, as a receiving house for visiting productions including the National’s One Man, Two Guvnors, Avenue Q and the Donmar Warehouse’s production of King Lear, for presenting dance work and for productions in the Lowry Studio.

The Manchester Theatre Awards are the rebranded Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards. After the newspaper announced last July that it was cutting its awards, nine critics set up an organisation to continue them. The nine critics sit on the judging panel and the prize-giving represents the biggest award ceremony of its kind outside London.

It has not been announced when the winners of the Manchester Theatre Awards 2011 will be revealed.
