Birmingham Repertory Theatre is to team up with theatres in Germany, Poland and Croatia to explore attitudes to Europe across the continent.
Playwrights from the four venues – Dresden State Theatre in Germany, Teatr Polski Bydgoszcz in Poland, Croatia’s Zagreb Youth Theatre and Birmingham – will each work with a playwright to create a single play using research and interviews from each country.
The playwrights involved in the project are Steve Waters, Lutz Hϋbner, Malgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk and Tena Stivicic and the multilingual play will tour to each country in 2013, beginning in Croatia. It is currently entitled Four Cities, Four Stories and it is being part-funded by the European Commission.
Stuart Rogers, executive director at Birmingham Rep, said: “With the current state of affairs in Europe this project couldn’t be more timely. As the very future of our continent is at stake, it’s vital that artists and the general public, as well as politicians and economists, have a chance to make their voices heard in the great European debate.”
