The Heritage Lottery Fund has confirmed a grant of £867,000 to the Royal Court Liverpool Trust, meaning that the venue can start work on its £10.6 million refurbishment early next year.
The work on the Grade II-listed theatre, which was built in 1938, will see improved toilet facilities and a lift to the circle and balcony installed, alongside improved bars and foyer space and, if enough money is raised, the creation of a new rooftop bar and restaurant.
Judi Dench, who is patron of the Royal Court Trust, said: “The Royal Court is one of our best loved regional theatres and especially dear to me. I made my stage debut here as Ophelia in the 50s and it was a wonderful experience. I am delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund have decided to support plans for the first phase of the theatres regeneration and look forward to seeing the Royal Court start a new chapter in its rich history.”
