The Liverpool Playhouse Studio will re-open on October 20 as a performance venue, exactly 42 years after its original launch in 1969.
The studio has been used in recent years as a rehearsal space but has now been converted into a studio theatre seating around 65. Its programme is to launch with The Swallowing Dark by Liverpool writer Lizzie Nunnery, which is a co-production with Theatre 503 in London. It is due to host new writing festival Everyword in November.
Gemma Bodinetz, artistic director of the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, said: “In getting ready to mark the centenary of the Liverpool Repertory Company, we wanted to look at least as much to the Playhouse’s future as its past, and it seemed the most special present we could give this theatre would be the reopening of the studio as a performance space.”
The conversion has been supported by Arts Council England and the Friends of Liverpool Playhouse.
