The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters has announced that Elton John will be the first musician to receive one of five new fellowships marking the 50th anniversary of the Ivor Novello Awards.
John will be presented with the accolade, joining existing fellows Paul McCartney, Malcolm Arnold and John Barry, during a special tribute to the Ivor Novellos that will be broadcast by BBC1 in the autumn.
He said: “I am honoured and humbled by this recognition. The Ivor Novello Awards are all about the art of songwriting, which has always been my passion.”
This will be the first in a series of television programmes to commemorate 50 years of the awards. The four remaining fellowships will be announced later this year.
Academy chairman David Ferguson said: “We are particularly pleased that Elton John has agreed to accept this honour and we are sure it will be a very special evening.”
