Edinburgh Festival and King’s Theatres to enter talks with BECTU about reducing staff

Published Monday 7 February 2011 at 16:17 by Natalie Woolman

Festival City Theatres Trust, which operates the Festival and King’s Theatres in Edinburgh, is to open consultations with backstage union BECTU about reducing staff across the organisation.

The trust has given formal notice of the start of a 60-day consultation period during which it will discuss the proposed reductions with the union.

John Stalker, chief executive of Festival City Theatres Trust, said: “These are tough economic times and the trust has unfortunately experienced its own fair share of the current downturn over the past twelve months. In order to weather this storm and protect our business for the future it is, regrettably, necessary to contemplate a reduction in staff numbers.

“This will directly impact individuals who have given great service to the trust and so, for their sake, it is only right and proper that we conduct our discussions with BECTU sensitively and privately during this difficult time. Accordingly, the trust will be making no further public comment at this stage.”

The trust manages the Festival and King’s Theatres on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council.
