BBC plans online Waterloo Road spin-off

Published Friday 19 November 2010 at 15:23 by Matthew Hemley

BBC1 drama Waterloo Road is to launch an online spin-off that will allow viewers to find out what happened to characters from previous series.

The BBC said Waterloo Road Reunited, which is being produced by Shed Media Scotland, will feature a combination of scripted episodes, fictional social network sites and audio aimed at allowing viewers “to catch up with the lives and loves of favourite characters from past series”.

Sarah Clay, multiplatform commissioning executive for BBC Drama, said: “Unlike most dramas, Waterloo Road is unique in that every year popular characters have to leave the show because they leave school. We wanted to give fans a chance to follow their lives online. The video will focus on events that bring the ex-pupils together, but the story extends beyond video allowing the audience to follow their lives as if they were friends with them on Facebook.”

Waterloo Road Reunited is due to launch in Spring 2011, while the sixth series of Waterloo Road returns to BBC1 in the new year.
