Christine Payne re-elected as Equity general secretary

Equity general secretary Christine Payne has been re-elected after standing unopposed.

Payne, who has been the union’s general secretary since 2005, commented: “I am delighted to have been given another five years to continue modernising Equity and increasing its membership – which is our strength. We have achieved a lot, but there is a lot still to do.

“The next 12 months will be particularly challenging, with a government determined to cut support for the arts. We will make sure that every member is given a chance through Equity to challenge them.”

Payne has a five-year term in the role, which will run to 2015.

When she was elected in 2005, Payne was the first woman to lead the union in its 75-year history. She was previously assistant general secretary for theatre and variety.
