Sunset Boulevard lyricist Don Black is to be recognised as an Icon by Broadcast Music Inc., the American performing rights organisation, at their annual awards ceremony in London next month.
Black’s stage credits include Tell Me on a Sunday, Aspects of Love and Bombay Dreams. His work on Sunset Boulevard earned him two Tony Awards and he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007.
Black, who has been awarded an OBE, six Ivor Novellos, a Golden Globe and an Oscar, has also written songs for numerous films, including The Italian Job, Dances With Wolves and Out of Africa. He has also penned several Bond themes, most notably Diamonds are Forever, and his compositions Ben and To Sir With Love have topped the US charts for Michael Jackson and Lulu respectively.
Black joins a list of past honourees including James Brown, the Bee Gees and Van Morrison. The ceremony takes place on October 5 at London’s Dorchester Hotel.
