BBC One has commissioned a two-part adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ novel Birdsong.

Faulks’ story, set during the First World War, is being adapted by Abi Morgan, whose other television credits include White Girl and Royal Wedding.

Meanwhile, a new drama written by Ronan Bennett called Undisclosed has also been commissioned by BBC One.

The BBC described the drama as “a taut and compelling mystery thriller”. It has been created by Bennett and Walter Bernstein.

BBC One also today announced a new comedy commission called Mrs Brown’s Boys, which is written by and stars comedian Brendan O’Carroll as Agnes Brown.

It is being filmed in Glasgow but is set in Dublin. The six-part series will be broadcast in 2011.

The channel has also ordered a new comedy panel show called Ask Rhod Gilbert, which will see the Welsh comedian answer questions from celebrities and members of the public.

BBC One controller Jay Hunt said: “These new commissions demonstrate the sheer range and creative ambition on BBC One. From adapting a modern classic like Birdsong to developing new talent across comedy, the channel is continuing to deliver bold programming for audiences.”

Hunt also announced she has ordered second series of the dramas Sherlock and Luther.

“Sherlock was the hit of the Summer. Luther the most memorable new detective on the block. I am delighted they will both be returning to BBC One,” Hunt said.
