Barbershopera - Apocalypse? No! has picked up two prizes at this year’s MTM:UK Musical Theatre Awards at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The show was recognised in the Best Book for a New Musical and Best Lyrics for a New Musical categories. Meanwhile, Best Music for a New Musical was won by The House of Mirrors and Hearts, Most Promising New Musical went to Fresher. The Musical and Best Production of a Musical was awarded to the revival of Five Guys Names Moe.
Two discretionary awards were also given by the judges - The Emperor’s Quest was recognised for its work for young audiences, while Zambezi Express was given Best Ensemble.
Commenting on the judging process, awards co-ordinator Fiona Orr said: “The judging panel have made awards that reflect the increasing talent shown in Edinburgh across the musical theatre genre. The inaugural judges’ discretionary Awards are particularly interesting as it gives the panel the opportunity to recognise and reward talent beyond the main MTM Awards.”
The awards are administered by Musical Theatre Matters, an industry body set up to promote new musical theatre.
