ACE publishes results of public consultation

The cultural sector has said that Arts Council England should continue to focus on talent and excellence as part of its long-term strategy, according to the findings of a public consultation published today.

ACE published the results of its consultation on a 10-year strategic framework for the sector – Achieving Great Art for Everyone – and many respondents said that excellence should be the primary reason for the arts council awarding financial support.

ACE proposed five headline goals for the sector. These were – that talent and artistic excellence thrive and are celebrated, that arts leaders and the cultural workforce are diverse and highly skilled, that more people value and enjoy the arts, every child and young person has the opportunity to experience the richness of the arts and the arts sector is sustainable and innovative.

More than 2,500 people took part in the consultation, which ran from January to April this year. Most respondents said that they think the sector should look for new income streams, and ACE should help them to develop these. The majority also said that they would like a shift towards more flexible funding structures.

Most respondents said that ACE should work to promote the sector, and encourage broadcasters to include more arts in their programming as a means of achieving this.

However, some people were unsure how realistic ACE’s objectives were in the current financial climate and others felt its proposals were too vague.

ACE chief executive Alan Davey said: “Our funding decisions for 2011/12 and beyond will be made in the context of significant spending cuts, but also in the context of those long term ambitions. The 10-year framework that emerges from this consultation will enable us to be clear about our priorities, more flexible and responsive to the changing environment, and to make every penny of public money count.”

ACE will review its proposed framework in light of the public consultation. It plans to develop a final version, which will be published this autumn.
