Select Committee launches inquiry into arts funding

The House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee has set up an inquiry into arts funding.

Chaired by John Whittingdale, the committee is calling for evidence and views from individuals and organisations on a number of issues related to arts and heritage funding.

The inquiry seeks written submissions about what impact recent and future spending cuts could have on the sector, both at central government and local-authority levels, and what level of public subsidy the arts require that is also sustainable for the public purse.

Further issues for discussion include whether the current funding distribution system works, what the impact of recent changes to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s arms-length bodies, including abolition of the Film Council, will be and whether the government needs to create more incentives for private donors.

Submissions must be received by September 2.
