BBC Radio and Television have come together to launch an initiative aimed at showcasing new comedy writing talent.

The Corporation said the initiative, called Happy Tuesdays, will give some “of the most exciting comedy talent around” the chance to try out new ideas and formats, with a view to full series being commissioned either for television or radio.

Beginning on July 20, at 11pm on Radio 4, Happy Tuesdays will run for five weeks, with writers taking part including Justin Moorhouse and Jim Poyser, Will Smith, Beth Chalmers and John-Luke Roberts.

Actors lined up to perform in the season include Olivia Colman, David Mitchell, Katy Wix, Rufus Jones, Anne Reid and Morwenna Banks.

Happy Tuesdays follows the successful Happy Mondays season broadcast on Radio 4 in 2008, which provided a platform to the writing talents of Jon Culshaw and Stephen K Amos.
