Bectu criticises BBC pay offer

Published Tuesday 15 June 2010 at 12:06 by Matthew Hemley

Broadcasting union Bectu has criticised the BBC for being “out of step” with other public sector employers, after the Corporation offered staff earning under £38,000 a 1% increase to their pay.

In an email to BBC staff, Lucy Adams, director of BBC People, said staff earning less than £37,726 will have a 1% increase in 2010/11, while those earning above this amount will have their pay frozen in 2010/11.

“This has been a tough decision, not least because we know that, in common with the public as a whole, all BBC staff are facing significant cost of living increases at the moment. However, in the current economic climate where basic pay awards across the UK remain on average very low, we believe that this offer is fair and reasonable,” she said.

Bectu and the NUJ have criticised the proposals, labelling the 1% increase “unacceptable”.

The unions had submitted a claim for an increase of more than 7%.

Bectu general secretary Gerry Morrissey said: “The BBC’s plan to spend just 1% of the pay bill on staff reward in 2010/11 is unacceptable. This claim is about rank and file BBC staff, not senior executives or on-screen talent who can command six figure salaries.”

He added: “BBC staff deserve a fair increase in pay for 2010/11, one which rewards their loyalty and commitment and which recognises the continuing high demands placed upon them.”

Morrissey urged the BBC to “rethink their position” and insisted the BBC could afford a “substantial response” to the union’ claims of inflation plus 2%.

A further response from the BBC is expected by June 30.
