English National Opera’s website has crashed due to the high volume of people trying to book tickets for The Duchess of Malfi, which went on sale this morning.
ENO is collaborating with immersive theatre company Punchdrunk on a new production of The Duchess of Malfi. Just 13 performances play to audiences at the Great Eastern Quay in Newham, London from July 13.
A spokesperson for ENO said that the company was working on the fault but that it expected the tickets to sell out very quickly. She added: “Since I have worked here we haven’t had this much demand for a production.”
ENO commissioned composer Torsten Rasch to create the new piece, based on John Webster’s 17th century play, and it will be performed in a vacant space in the Royal Albert Basin in Newham, London.
Audiences will wander through the space, creating their own experience of the opera which will feature 17 performers and the ENO orchestra.
The Duchess of Malfi, Punchdrunk’s first foray into opera, will be directed by the company’s artistic director Felix Barrett and conducted by Stephen Higgins.
