Matthew Evans has been announced as the winner of this year’s JMK Young Director Award, for his ‘site-specific’ proposals for a new production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Jewish Wife at Battersea Arts Centre.
Evans, who has trained at the Young Vic Theatre and National Theatre Studio and directs for collaborative theatre group Gameshow, will be given the chance to stage his production at the BAC thanks to the £12,000 prize from the JMK Trust.
He told The Stage the concept behind his staging was to find a “balance between the epic theatre of Brecht and the immersive theatre for which BAC is known”. The show will be staged for a four-week run from July 21 in the 50-seat members’ bar space at BAC.
Two runners-up were also announced, who will share a prize of £2,000 supported by the Ian Ritchie Foundation. They were Kate Budgen and Duncan Macmillan.
The JMK Award was established in 1998, following the death of young director James Menzies-Kitchin, and is supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. It is open to aspiring theatre practitioners under the age of 30. This year the award received a total of 125 applicants.
Previous winners include Equus director Thea Sharrock, Gate Theatre joint artistic director Natalie Abrahami, and Actors Touring Company artistic director Bijan Sheibani.
