The recipients will be honored at an invitation-only ceremony at New World Stages, in New York City, on Tuesday, June 8.
Redmayne is currently starring opposite Alfred Molina in the Broadway production of Red, a role he originated in London and for which he won the Olivier Award. Redmayne has been nominated for a Tony Award for the part. Riseborough recently completed a run in The Pride, which had an acclaimed Off-Broadway run this season.
Johansson received a Theatre World Award in recognition for her role in a Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge.
Other Theatre world winners for performances during the 2009/10 New York theatre season include Nina Arianda, (Venus in Fur) Chris Chalk (Fences), Bill Heck (The Orphans’ Home Cycle), Jon Michael Hill (Superior Donuts), Keira Keeley (The Glass Menagerie), Sahr Ngaujah (FELA!), Heidi Schreck (Circle Mirror Transformation), Stephanie Umoh (Ragtime) and Michael Urie (The Temperamentals).
First given out in 1945, the Theatre World Awards are one of the oldest awards in New York theatre history and are considered one of the most prestigious to receive, signifying a sort of unofficial welcome into the New York theatre community. Each year the Theatre World Committee traditionally selects 6 men and 6 women as recipients, the awards presented by past winners.
The Theatre World annual remains the definitive record of the American theatre season, including photos and statistics from Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off Broadway, and regional companies, in addition to special sections dedicated to obituaries, long-running productions, and major theatrical awards. Theatre World is edited by Ben Hodges and Scott Denny, and published by Applause Theatre and Cinema Books, a division of Hal Leonard Performing Arts Publishing Group.
