Published Thursday 1 April 2010 at 10:25 by Matthew Hemley

ITV has commissioned a fifth series of Martin Clunes drama Doc Martin.

Eight episodes will be produced next year by Buffalo Pictures, the independent production company owned by Clunes and his wife Philippa Braithwaite.

Announcing the recommission today, the broadcaster said the show is “considered one of ITV’s most successful drama series”.

ITV controller of drama commissioning Sally Haynes said: “Doc Martin is a massive audience pleaser for ITV. We’re thrilled Martin has agreed to play Doc Martin for another series and Phillippa and Buffalo are to produce.”

Returning cast members include Caroline Catz and Joe Absolom.
