Naomie Harris beat Julie Walters and Suranne Jones to be named best actress at this year’s Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

Harris won the award, which was presented at a ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel last night, for her performance in BBC1’s Small Island.
The best actor award went to David Oyelowo, who also starred in Small Island, and who beat Stephen Graham, who was nominated for The Street, and Tom Hardy, who was up for his role in Sky One’s The Take.
Peter Bowker won the prize for best drama writer for Occupation, while Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, who penned E4’s The Inbetweeners, took the award for best comedy writers.
The Street won the drama series award, while Five Minutes of Heaven, shown on BBC2, was named best single drama.
Meanwhile, EastEnders triumphed in the soap award over Casualty and The Bill, and The Thick of It was successful in the scripted comedy category.
Best comedy performance went to Miranda Hart, whose show Miranda was broadcast on BBC2, and who beat Peter Capaldi, star of The Thick of It, and Gavin and Stacey’s Ruth Jones.
Harry Hill triumphed in the entertainment performance category, taking the honours over Michael McIntyre and Ant and Dec.
Finally, Coronation Street creator Tony Warren was presented a lifetime achievement award.
