Southbank Centre launches Brazilian festival
Capoeira, drums and Brazilian folk music will all be part of the Southbank Centre’s Festival Brazil which will run over this summer.
The multi-arts programme, which includes music, dance, visual art, debates and literary events, will use all of the Southbank Centre’s spaces and run from June 19 to September 5.
Highlights in the HSBC-sponsored programme include family show Brazil! Brazil! which is to play the E4 Udderbelly at Southbank Centre and a performance by Maria Bethania, the singer known as the “Soul of Brazil”.
Gilberto Gil, who founded the Tropicalia music movement and has worked with Pink Floyd as well as well as serving as minister of culture in Brazil, is to perform on July 21 in the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Southbank Centre artistic director Jude Kelly commented: “From the favelas and beaches to the skyscrapers of its great cities, Brazil is one of the most exciting countries on earth. Our aim is to find what is at the heart of Brazilian culture today, what the country is thinking about and talking about, and what is behind the quiet revolution of the last 20 years.”
