Royal Ballet resident choreographer Wayne McGregor is to direct a large-scale dance routine in the run up to the Olympic Games as part of Big Dance 2012.

Big Dance is due to receive £2.89 million from Legacy Trust UK to expand its work and McGregor’s Big World Dance will headline the 2012 programme.

Big Dance, the biennial festival established by the Mayor of London’s Office in partnership with Arts Council England in 2006, also announced plans for this year’s programme.

T-Mobile will be the title sponsor for Big Dance 2010, supporting a programme that includes English National Ballet performing with Harlequins Rugby League at Twickenham Stoop Stadium and the Big Dance Schools Pledge, a world record attempt for the biggest multi-location dance routine on July 9.

Director of Big Dance Jacqueline Rose said that she was aiming to get three million Londoners involved by 2012 and called the festival “an invitation to everyone to join in”.

Big Dance is being organised through five hubs across the capital, each of which is being handled by a dance partner. These are East London Dance, English National ballet, Greenwich Dance Agency, Siobhan Davies Dance and Sadler’s Wells.

Big Dance 2010 will run from July 3 to 11 and just ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
