The 150th anniversary of Anton Chekhov’s birth is to be marked with a special season of programmes to be broadcast across BBC Radio this month.
The season begins on January 19 with a Radio 4 documentary The House that Chekhov Built, in which actor Michael Pennington journeys to Yalta for an inside-view of Chekhov’s home, life and works.
Pennington will also feature in a new Woman’s Hour drama on Radio 4 called About Love, while Radio 3’s The Essay series will feature Timberlake Wertenbaker, Simon Russell Beale and Ruth Thomas reflecting on Chekhov’s influence on them.
Radio 3 will also broadcast a new production of The Seagull, starring Siobhan Redmond as Arkadina and Daniela Nardini as Polina, while Radio 7 will celebrate Chekhov with a collection of archive recordings of drama and short stories.
