The show will push Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Miss Saigon off the spot, when it plays its 4,265th performance tonight (Friday, December 18).
The original Broadway production also stands at number nine on the list of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history.
The Lion King is one of only five musicals in theatre history to play for ten years or more on both Broadway and the West End.
In October, Julie Taymor’s stage adaptation of the Disney film celebrated its tenth anniversary in London. The show has been seen at the Lyceum Theatre by more than 8 million people, and more than 50 million worldwide.
It can also be seen in Paris, Tokyo, Hamburg, Las Vegas and on tour in north America. A new production is set to open in Singapore in 2010.
The London production features a 46-strong cast, and is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions.
