The Bafta television awards will have two new categories from next year, with prizes for best supporting actress and actor introduced.
In addition, the award for best comedy performance is to be split into two, giving recognition to both the best female performance in a comedy and the best male performance.
The announcement was made today by Bafta, which also revealed that the awards ceremony, usually held in April, will instead take place on June 6 next year.
This means the awards will take place after the Bafta TV Craft Awards, which will be held in May.
John Willis, chairman of the television committee, said: “We are delighted to be introducing these changes for 2010. As a committee, we annually review all categories to ensure the ceremony is relevant to, and reflects, the industry’s output, and these additional categories do exactly that.”
