Channel 4 head of film and drama Tessa Ross has won an award for her contribution to the promotion of diversity at the inaugural Cultural Diversity Network awards.
Held last night, the network’s awards celebrate people and companies that promote excellence in diverse creative output, with Ross being awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Promoting Diversity award.
She beat Sara Hanson, ITV Studios’ talent and diversity manager, and Simon Dickson, who is head of documentaries at Channel 4.
Other winners at last night’s awards, hosted by Alan Carr, were Olga TV, which produces The Paul O’Grady Show and which was honoured for its promotion of diversity in off-screen recruitment.
Meanwhile, Channel 4 programme Find Me a Family beat competition from Skins and BBC1’s The Street to win the award for making diversity more mainstream.
Actress Helen Mirren supported the awards with a pre-recorded message, in which she said: “The face of television and film is a reflection of ourselves, is a reflection of our world, and really all one asks for it that the world of media truly reflect our world in an honest way.”
The Cultural Diversity Network is a coalition of broadcasters and focuses on improving multicultural representation both on- and off-screen.
