A new online radio player which aims to provide the output of all licensed UK radio stations, and which will allow users to search by content and song title, is being developed by the BBC and the commercial radio sector.
The UK Radioplayer is to launch early next year and will stream more than 400 licensed national, local, community and student radio stations.
It will allow listeners to search every station on the UK Radioplayer network, and users will be able to identify news programmes, sports highlights, musical genres or individual songs, using a new search engine designed for radio.
Users will also be able to store their favourite stations on pre-set buttons, for easy access.
The player will be launched through radio stations’ websites.
Tim Davie, director of BBC Audio and Music, said: “This is a really exciting development and a result of focused, collaborative thinking within the radio industry. The aim of this service is to grow listening across the industry and help preserve radio’s unique position.”
