Taiwanese choreographer Shu-Yi Chou has been declared the winner of Sadler’s Wells’ inaugural Online Global Dance Contest, beating 170 competitors from 34 countries.
The contest uniquely required applicants to submit videos of their work via YouTube to a dedicated competition website.
A shortlist of 10 candidates from as far afield as Northern Ireland, Korea, the United States, Israel, Nigeria and Australia, was selected by a jury that included Sadler’s Wells’ artistic director Alistair Spalding and choreographer Arlene Philips, before being opened to a public vote online.
26-year-old Chou won £2,000 for his choreography for 12 dancers. He will perform the work with his own company at Sadler’s Wells in January as part of the venue’s fourth annual showcase of international dance, Sampled.
Chou’s work has already been seen in Europe and the United States and in 2005 he co-founded Horse, Taiwan’s first all-male dance company.
