TKTS booth extends openings hours due to demand for Sunday shows

The Society of London Theatre is to extend the weekend opening hours of its TKTS booth in Leicester Square in response to the growing popularity of Sunday openings among West End producers and audiences.

Nearly a quarter of all West End venues - 12 out 52 - are now hosting Sunday matinees, a trend which has been made easier following the 2008 SOLT / Equity agreement over pay for West End actors and stage managers, which included a standard clause for Sunday performances.

In addition to productions which were already open on Sundays, prior to the SOLT/Equity agreement, such as The Lion King and Stomp, new shows offering extra weekend performances include Hairspray, Inherit The Wind and The Shawshank Redemption. Meanwhile, family shows The Gruffalo, A Christmas Carol and The Snowman will offer Sunday performances this Christmas and Jersey Boys will offer Sunday matinees from January.

SOLT has said that its TKTS booth is “selling more Sunday tickets than ever before” and will now open on Sundays from 11am to 4pm. Its previous opening hours had been 12pm to 3pm.
