Dance companies and artists are to be given the chance to pitch projects to a team of 18 producers, including Sadler’s Wells, The Lowry and The Place, in a Dragon’s Den-style scheme.
The artists will create their bids around areas of research set by the producers, which also include the Birmingham Hippodrome, Dance 4 and Greenwich Dance.
The aim is to fund a series of projects that explore four themes - diverse arts practice and disability, artists in their mid to late career, work that is transferable between theatre and non-theatre spaces, and children’s work.
The pitching process will take part on February 5 as part of biennial networking and showcasing festival the British Dance Edition. The findings of the projects will be shared with the wider dance industry between April and September 2010.
BDE will be hosted by DanceXchange, and will feature a programme of performances and events for the public to meet the artists involved.
The show line-up will include Arthur Pita’s new production God’s Garden, Jasmin Vardimon’s Yesterday, and Vincent Dance Theatre’s If We Go On.
Sadler’s Wells’ production In the Spirit of Diaghiev – featuring works by Wayne McGregor, Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Javier de Frutos – will also form part of the programme.
Meanwhile, Akram Khan’s forthcoming show Vertical Road will be part of BDE’s Works in Progress strand, along with pieces by Will Tuckett, Rosie Kay Dance Company and Protein.
David Massingham, BDE 2010 artistic director, said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming dance promoters from across the world to Birmingham for British Dance Edition 2010.
“We have an amazing line up of performances and events in an edition that has many artists and companies never featured before. It’s all about networking, debating and enjoying a new style BDE that will challenge perceptions of what British dance is all about.”
BDE will run from February 3-6 in venues around Birmingham. For more see www.bde2010.co.uk
