The world’s longest running musical, The Fantasticks, is to come to the West End in a new production, opening at the Duchess Theatre in May, 2010.

The Fantasticks first played in New York nearly 50 years ago and has since become the longest running show of any kind in the United States and the longest running musical in the world. It has played in over 2,000 cities and towns in the States, and internationally, it has been staged in 67 countries.

The show’s original off-Broadway production ran a total of 42 years and 17,162 performances.

It is produced in the West End by Kumiko Yoshii for Gorgeous Entertainment, John Gore and Thomas B. McGrath in association with Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer for Nimax Theatres. The show will run from May 24 with press night on June 9.

Book, lyrics and music are by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt and the production is directed and choreographed by Amon Miyamoto. Casting has yet to be announced.
