Amanda Burton, best known for her performances in Silent Witness and The Commander, is to take a lead role in the BBC drama series Waterloo Road.

She joins the cast as Head Teacher Karen Fisher and will make her first appearance in the drama next year, which is made by Shed Productions for BBC Scotland.

Head of independent drama for BBC Scotland, Anne Mensah, described Burton as “an actress of exceptional quality and enormous popularity with the audience”.

“We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming her to Waterloo Road. We have a fantastic cast and brilliant new stories to tell as the programme continues to go from strength to strength,” she said.

The new series, starring former Strictly Come Dancing champion Tom Chambers, returns to BBC1 on October 28.

Meanwhile, Ramon Tikaram, famous for playing Ferdy in This Life, is to join the cast of EastEnders.

He will join the soap later this year, playing Qadim, father of Amira Shah, played by Preeya Kalidas.
