Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is to be reinterpreted by a company formed of professional and amateur dancers, in a production that will be broadcast on BBC3.
The broadcast will be part of a series of BBC programmes marking the 100th anniversary of the Ballets Russes, which will also include For Art’s Sake - The Story of the Ballets Russes and In the Spirit of Diaghilev, which will be both be broadcast on BBC4.
The Rite of Spring is being led by the Balletboyz - Michael Nunn and William Trevitt - who will handpick a mixture of amateur and professional dancers to perform the ballet.
All the dancers selected will be experienced in different dancing styles, including contemporary, tango and pole dancing.
The programme will feature a documentary, which traces the history of Stravinsky’s work, and will culminate with the performance of The Rite of Spring.
BBC3 controller Danny Cohen said: “BBC3 wants to keep building its reputation for innovative arts events. The Balletboyz’ contemporary energy feels like a fantastic way for us to do this over the holidays.”
Meanwhile, BBC4’s In the Spirit of Diaghilev features a range of choreographers, including Wayne McGregor and Russell Maliphant, showcasing new works at Sadler’s Wells that have been inspired by Diaghilev, who founded the Ballets Russes.
For Art’s Sake - The Story of Ballets Russes traces the legacy of the ballet company and its influence on dance, art and culture.
