New £8.9 million dance centre opens in Ipswich
Suffolk-based arts agency DanceEast has opened the doors to its new £8.9 million performance and training centre.
The Jerwood DanceHouse, designed by John Lyall Architects, is the centrepiece of the £70 million regeneration scheme of Ipswich’s waterfront area. Located on the site of the old Cranfields Mill, the development is based in the lower floors of a new 23-storey tower block.
It will provide the dance company with 2,500 square metre of studio space, teaching rooms and a 200-seat theatre.
The new centre will present touring work and shows that DanceEast has been involved in creating. It will also be home to the DanceEast Academy, the government-funded Centre for Advanced Training for the East of England.
The inaugural season will include an international symposium looking at dance training called Inspired!. Choreographer Will Tuckett, the Mark Morris Dance Group and Arthur Pita will take up residency at the new venue as part of the season.
