The Royal Opera House has announced it is to stage its first ever opera created through social networking site Twitter later this year.
Members of the public will be asked to submit ‘tweets’ - postings of up to 140 characters - which will be combined to form a libretto. These will then be set to original music by composer Helen Porter and mixed with some more familiar opera music. Excerpts will be performed at the Royal Opera House as part of Deloitte Ignite 09 in September.
Alison Duthie, head of ROH2 at the Royal Opera House commented: “It’s the people’s opera and the perfect way for everyone to become involved with the inventiveness of opera as the ultimate form of storytelling. Expect the unexpected. W ho knows how the story will evolve, but get tweeting and you can play your part in your opera.”
