Cumbria’s Rosehill Theatre is to launch its 50th anniversary celebrations this September with an exhibition of the stage and costume designs of Oliver Messell.
The exhibition, which will be the largest display of the leading theatre designer’s work since 1983, will be housed at the theatre for three years. The items are being loaned to the Cumbria venue from the V&A, and will be displayed in what will be known as the Messell Room.
Richard Elder, director of the Rosehill Theatre, said:
“I am honoured we are able to exhibit such a significant collection of British theatre designs at Rosehill, as Oliver Messel is very much part of Rosehill’s dynamic history.
“The exhibition will demonstrate the significance, glamour and quality of Oliver Messel’s work in the intimate atmosphere and surroundings of Rosehill.”
The interior of the Rosehill Theatre was designed by Messell in 1959, and is one of only a small number of public places where he undertook interior design commissions.
