Little Britain star Matt Lucas is to take the lead role in a new BBC Radio 4 drama about cartoonist and musician Gerald Hoffnung.

Hoffnung Drawn to Music has been written by Alan Stafford, and will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Hoffnung in September this year.

Lucas will play Hoffnung, with further casting for the production yet to be announced.

The new Radio 4 play is being made by independent company Above the Title, which made The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists for Radio 4, and is behind the Dirk Gently radio series.

It is being produced by Adam Bromley and directed by Lissa Evans, and is based around a humorous symphonic concert Hoffnung organised at the Royal Festival Hall.
