Homer’s The Odyssey wins London Bubble’s audience vote

Audiences of London Bubble have chosen the Odyssey to be the theatre organisation’s summer promenade performance, after an initiative allowing the general public to chose a one-off show as part of the company’s programme.

The idea for the production was among 53 suggestions put forward by the audience members and supporters who had signed up as stakeholders of Fan Made Theatre, the name of the project launched by Bubble . They then voted from a shortlist of five proposals selected by creative director Jonathan Petherbridge and a panel of six advisers. The Odyssey won by a clear majority.

Petherbridge said he felt it was an appropriate choice. He added: “Homer is now seen to be a compiler of ideas drawn from a number of individuals – rather like Fan Made Theatre. We shall continue to involve our stakeholders as the show evolves. This is going to be a very exciting process, and I am thrilled by the response from so many of our fans. Casting will be announced at the end of May, rehearsals begin on June 8. We will be inviting all the stakeholders to come and see work in progress. It is still not too late to sign up to Fan Made Theatre and make your contribution to the show.”

Simon Startin – who worked on Metamorphoses for London Bubble in 2006 -will adapt the new version of Homer’s epic.
