Dench forced to pull out of Madame de Sade following fall
Judi Dench has been forced to pull out from her current West End show Madame de Sade, following a fall at the stage door of the Wyndham’s Theatre.
According to a statement from the show’s producers, Dench was taken to A&E last night where she was diagnosed with a severely sprained ankle. She has been advised to bear no weight on the foot.
The statement said: “As a consequence, Judi’s role of Madame de Montreuil will be performed this weekend by her understudy Marjorie Hayward. The Donmar and Judi apologise for any upset or inconvenience this may cause, and wish to reassure those with tickets that it is her intention to return to the role next week.”
Yukio Mishima’s Madame de Sade, which opened last week and is due to run until May 23, is part of the Donmar’s West End season at the Wyndham’s and is directed by Michael Grandage. Alongside Dench, the cast includes Frances Barber, Rosamund Pike, Fiona Button, Deborah Findlay, and Jenny Galloway.
