Roger Allam and Philip Quast to star in La Cage aux Folles

Roger Allam is set to take over from Graham Norton as drag-queen Albin in West End musical La Cage Aux Folles.

Allam, who won an Olivier Award for Best Actor in 2002 for dragging up as Captain Terri Dennis in Privates on Parade at the Donmar Warehouse, will replace Norton on May 4.

He will be joined on stage by original cast member Philip Quast who will reprise the role of Albin’s lover Georges. Allam and Quast are scheduled to appear in the musical until August 26.

Meanwhile, producers have announced that La Cage Aux Folles will extend its run at the Playhouse Theatre until January 9, 2010. Tickets will be released for sale on March 16.

Terry Johnson’s production originally opened at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2007. It transferred to the West End last October, with Douglas Hodge in the lead role of Albin. He was replaced by chat show host Norton in January, and the run was initially extended to April 25.

La Cage aux Folles, which tells the story of a gay couple in a Saint Tropez Nightclub, premiered in 1983 at the Palace Theatre on Broadway and ran for 1,761 performances.
