Carry On actress Laye dies at 74

Top comedy actress Dilys Laye, best remembered for her roles in the Carry On films, has died at the age of 74. She had been suffering from cancer.

London-born Laye made her name on the West End stage in the fifties in a series of revues before starring in Carry On Doctor, Carry On Cruising, Carry On Spying and Carry On Camping in the sixties.

She also appeared in the St Trinian's films and A Countess From Hong Kong (1967) which was directed by Charlie Chaplin and starred Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren. She was a leading member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and more recently had been seen in Blonde Bombshells at West Yorkshire Playhouse and in the Drury Lane revival of My Fair Lady directed by Trevor Nunn.

On television she was seen in Holby City, Doctors, Midsomer Murders and she played Maxine Palmer in EastEnders. She died on February 13. A full obituary will appear in The Stage newspaper.
