Joanne Froggatt and Helen Baxendale to star in Radio 4’s new take on The Sound of Music

Former Coronation Street actress Joanne Froggatt is to star alongside Helen Baxendale in BBC Radio 4’s new take on The Sound of Music, which retells the Rodgers and Hammerstein story through the eyes of Maria’s rival, Baroness Schrader.

Froggatt, who played Zoe Tattersall in the ITV soap, will take the role of the baroness in the production, which has the working title How Do You Solve a Problem Like That?.

As originally revealed by The Stage, the retelling, written by Annie Caulfield, explores the famous story from the viewpoint of the baroness - the original love interest of Captain von Trapp - who falls from favour when Maria is brought into the von Trapp household as governess.

Caulfield said her story was based on fact, including memoirs from the von Trapp children, but admitted she had invented a “Sex and The City scenario” in her drama where Schrader goes for “coffee and cakes in Vienna with a friend” to discuss the captain.

Baxendale, who was in ITV’s Cold Feet, will play the baroness’ friend, while Helen Ayres will take the role of Maria.

It will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on June 27 at 2.30pm.
