Ian McKellen to reprise Walter role for Radio 4

Ian McKellen is to reprise his role as Walter, a part he originally played in a Channel 4 drama that formed part of the broadcaster’s opening night, in a new play for Radio 4.

In the film Walter, which was directed by Stephen Frears and written by David Cook, McKellen played the title role - a mentally ill man who is taken to a psychiatric hospital after the death of his mother.

Radio 4’s new drama, called Walter Now, is again written by Cook and depicts Walter as a pensioner. It looks at how he copes with being back in the community following years in an institution.

The cast includes Anna-Marie Heslop, Edmund Davies and Becky Hindley. The 60-minute play will be broadcast on Saturday, January 10 at 2.30pm.
