Spooks has been recommissioned for an eighth series, as the drama’s current outing enjoys strong ratings on BBC1.
Details of the new series have not yet been revealed, but Simon Crawford Collins, the show’s executive producer and joint managing director at Kudos - the company that makes the series - promised “even more compelling storylines and high drama”.
“Spooks is currently enjoying an exceptional run and viewers will be shocked when this series ends with a sting in its tale. As for next year, we’re currently working with our fantastic team of writers to predict the big stories for 2009 to keep Spooks’ prescience in these dramatically changing times,” he said.
BBC controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson described Spooks as “a channel defining show” which he said consistently pushed the “boundaries of television drama while maintaining strong viewer loyalty and attracting critical acclaim”.
The show’s current series features Robin Hood star Richard Armitage and Hermione Norris. It regularly attracts over 5.7 million viewers on BBC1 and BBC3.
Filming on series eight begins in March 2009 and will be broadcast late in 2009.
