Fisher to return to The Sound of Music

Connie Fisher is to reprise her role as Maria in Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian’s production of the Sound of Music, which is set to embark on a UK tour next year.

It will open at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on July 26, where it will play until August 29, before travelling to the Alhambra in Bradford and Southampton’s Mayflower. Further venues will be announced shortly.

Fisher originally landed the role in the musical in 2006 after nearly two million viewers voted her as the winner of BBC talent search How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?. She starred in the show, which is currently playing at the London Palladium, until February, when she was replaced by Summer Strallen.

On September 28, she completed her run as Sonia in They’re Playing Our Song at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, and later this year she will appear in ITV drama Caught in a Trap.

The Sound of Music will be directed by Jeremy Sams and feature choreography by Arlene Phillips. The musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein premiered on Broadway in 1959, winning six Tony Awards. It first opened in London in 1961, and later in 1981.
