Amy Wedge

It is nice to learn the native tongue of your adopted country and so singer, guitarist and songwriter Amy Wedge decided to take part in a Welsh Channel 4 show called Welsh In a Week.

Now living in Cardiff she explains: “I had a record deal at 14, which did not work out, so I trained as an actor at the College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.”

Partners often meet through work and Amy and her Welsh husband, actor Alun Brinley are no exception. “We met at a theatre in north Wales where we were both in Welsh epic Hosts of Rebecca.”

Amy has twice won Best Female Solo Artist at the Welsh Music Awards. She says: “Last year I beat Charlotte Church. I was relatively unknown and press-wise it caused a stir - they are basically the Welsh equivalent of the Brit Awards.”

Although she hopes to return to Australia after being invited to join the Wales Rocks Sydney showcase during the Rugby World Cup, Amy has just signed a record deal for her new album and is already working on the next one.

“I tend to write songs like most people would write a diary,” she says. “It can be about anything in my life.”
