Enjoy starring Steadman to transfer to West End

Christopher Luscombe’s revival of Alan Bennett’s Enjoy, starring Alison Steadman, is to transfer to the West End for a limited 14-week run in February.

The production opened last month at the Theatre Royal Bath as part of Peter Hall’s summer repertory season, and is touring the UK. It will start its run at London’s Gielgud Theatre on February 2, with previews from January 27.

Enjoy - which was famously a theatrical failure when it originally premiered in 1980 - is set in the playwright’s home town of Leeds, and tells the story of an ageing couple whose daily life is observed by a sociologist.

The new production stars Olivier Award-winning Steadman, who has most recently appeared in Gavin and Stacey and Fanny Hill, and is best known for her performance in Mike Leigh’s 1977 film Abigail’s Party.

It also features David Troughton, who has worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, and featured in TV shows including Casualty 1907, New Tricks and Doctor Who.
